This structure is The Scrolling Book taught by Peter and Donna Thomas in their book More Making Books By Hand. I modified their version by using all cardboard (they use some wood) and by gluing the frame to the back as well as the spine. I also wrapped the scroll so that it moves front to back in the direction of the scroll rotation. I also kept good notes as I worked out the details because I plan to make several more for gifts. The cover paper is an end paper salvaged from a book headed for the landfill. The brown hinge paper is called “Soft Unryu-Espers” and was bought at Racine’s in Fort Bragg, CA, and the paint used on the frame is Golden Acrylic Yellow Ochre. The paper covering the raised title oval and used for the scroll is Southworth 100% cotton Resume paper in Ivory. The images are free clip art. The turn handles are cut from the grooved dowels used in woodworking and colored with a Faber-Castell pen. I created the text using Swift Publishing. I enjoy this book because of the surprises it offers: first the scroll itself, revealed when the cover is opened, then the changing images as the scroll is turned. The humorous book titles were made up by a writer friend in Fortuna, CA.
