Here the required vinyl tiles are set around the needed areas and the countertop has been cut (13 & 1/2" was cut off for a little "island" between the stove and fridge – those photos coming soon. The remainder of the countertop was temporarily positioned for final measurements. Lookin’ good!

Both newel posts are being dadoed to accept 3/4" 11-ply maple laminate board to support the depth of the countertop in three places. (A 2×4" runs along the back of the countertop affixed to the wall.) The maple is also being used for the facing woodwork, in separate dadoes. No screws or nails will be visible. The bottom will continue the 4" x 3" dishwasher kick area with the newel posts dadoed to 4" x 2" (to retain some meat there.)

The countertop ends are to be mitered and the left end is housing three shelves for wicker baskets, while the right end is housing shelves for cook-books and whatnot. The area directly under the sink is just going to be open even though she originally wanted shelves there (there simply isn’t room with the disposal.) This design will not use any doors – wait for further pictures! 🙂
