While the linseed oil is settling, time for a new scrapwood project: a rolling cart for my small planer, so I can get it off the floor and make it easier to use without doing harm to my back. Delighted to be using up more of my scrap stash, gets it out of the way, too.

The wood for the legs is interesting stuff. Years ago, I built a pergola in the back yard, and picked up a batch of Douglas fir 2x6s to use for it. One of the boards was not like the others, with swirly grain that didn’t go well with the perfectly straight grain of the rest of the fir boards. Wasn’t sure what was going on there, but I put it aside. When I finally decided to use it for this project, I discovered that it’s almost certainly not Douglas fir at all. Not sure what it is, but it smells wonderful when cut or planed, and planes incredibly sweetly. Think it would take carving beautifully as well, but is likely too soft to do anything very real with. Stiff enough for this purpose, though. Also darkens considerably over time with exposure to light. Will have to get out my wood identification books and figure out what it is…
