I have five of these. They were once school chairs at Ryde Primary School (Sydney, NSW) and were being thrown out in the early 1980s as the school was upgrading to more modern chairs. I was just moving into my own apartment and my mother, who was working at the school at the time, was able to bring five of them home for me.
I sanded and varnished them. Underneath, they still have chalk and paint markings on which rooms they came from such as "sewing" and "Room 4A".
They are beautiful and solid old chairs and have had a lot of use by my family. Terrible to think that they were being thrown out, maybe even burned.
