Loe Pool Boathouse

Loe Pool Boathouse

Taken on New Year’s Eve – So a good opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year!!!

Despite the forecast of another pretty grey morning, I decided to get up early and head out with the camera anyway.

Knowing that the tide was low, I first headed to Kennack Sands beach – as coastal locations are always my favourite when conditions are right. I should have planned better though… The overcast sky, thick with grey cloud, completely blotted out the rising sun which wasn’t able to cast any direct light or warm colour.

I jumped back in the car and scoured Google Maps for nearby woodland locations more suited to the flat light – I headed for Loe Pool.

From the Penrose NT car park, I first wondered the north side of the pool where I noticed a boathouse on the waters edge. With no real composition to be found from this side, I wandered further and snapped a few twisted trees just off the path.

With a shot of the boathouse still on my mind, I walked back and around to the opposing bank to try and shoot it from across the water with my longer lens. In my mind I was thinking that this would be a reccy for an autumnal image next year. As it turned out, even with the deciduous trees free of their leaves, I found it very difficult to find a clear shot without interference from branches and leaves encroaching into the frame (I did have to remove one offender in Photoshop but decided to leave the others in place).

When I returned home, I searched for images of this boathouse to see how other photographers had captured it. I couldn’t find a great deal of images, which made me feel slightly happier with my effort – rogue branches and all!
