I am planning to build a workbench in the 17th century French tradition. However, you need a workbench to make a workbench, so I’ve set up this temporary space by adding a sheet of thick maple ply to the top of an existing very sturdy but rough built-in bench. I also added a skirt of fir 2×6, which with a backing board should allow a holdfast to fit on the front. I will also be adding dogholes, but am not afraid to just screw down battens and planestops wherever I need them. I won’t bother with much of a vise, either, as I have some ways around that.
