Carved and Painted Wooden Panels and Pilaster with psudo-Corinthian column in the Main Hall of the Daria Daulat Bagh, the Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali, built around 1780AD. The carpet design with flowers goes back to Islamic Palaces and Tombs of the 14th Centuray and Later. The paintings of daily life and battle scenes on the left are by John Zoffany (1780AD).

Unfortunately, photography is restricted inside the palace (although no Indian tourists pay any attention to this restriction), so we have very limited views of the only interesting aspect of the palace, the woodcarving and painting.

The Daria Daulat Bagh Summer Palace of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali was built around 1780AD during the brief period when the Islamic fundamentalists Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan had seized power from the 300-year old Hindu Wodeyar Dynasty (Tipu was eventually killed by the British and power restored to the Hindus) . The dimensions of the palace and gardens are modest and the architecture is generally unimpressive, with a severe formal lawn that wouldn’t be out of place at Versailles. Inside, every surface is carved and painted in an odd mix of Mughal and Europeanizing styles. More kitsch than beautiful, though the effect is certainly luxurious. The place is popular with Indian tourists, especially Muslims.
