“Arizona Praying Mantis” (objects in the picture plane are smaller than they appear)

When I moved to Arizona 28 years ago I was struck by how small the Arizona praying mantis species were compared to the Midwest’s. Here they average about 3" in length; back there they grow to 6" It makes sense because a smaller surface area and a slender profile (this one appears pregnant) is a survival advantage in the intense heat of Arizona.
