The 22.5 degree sloping Handrail is constructed of "inch boards", which are actually 3/4 inch. The handrail newel (the support post) is made of 5 of these boards. The center board is actually two separate angled pieces with a space between to accept the lower rail – as shown in the upper right – and upper rail. The assembly at the wall is similarly constructed of 5 boards with the center made of two angled pieces with a space between.

On construction, the 5 boards in the two supports are glued. Later, the upper and lower rails are slipped into the openings that were left in the newel and wall mount.

Trim molding is nailed onto the sides of the rails to provide a slot for installation of the spindles. Four pieces of Quarter-Round make the grip on the upper rail. A floor anchor holds the base of the newel.
