The Vogel Era goods shed at Little River is surprisingly large; a testament to the importance that this station at the end of the branch line from Christchurch played in opening up Banks Peninsula for settlement. This area was home to a significant stand of timber and saw-milling played an important part in the line’s history until the early C20th. The original plan was to continue this line via a tunnel to the port town of Akaroa. It’s a shame that it didn’t happen, as it would it would be a great day trip for tourists today…
