The froe is an older tool commonly used for riving ‘bolts’ of wood into shakes to be used on roofs.
In this image, I’m riving a small piece of wood into thin strips for use in wooden rings.
The froe was purchased at an antique store. The handle (added later) and mallet are both hickory.
