Manual Labor

This man, in the village that surrounded the portion of the Great Wall that we visited, was turning wood on a self-created hand lathe. It was for creating the souvenirs that the tourists were buying at his stand.

The machine worked by pulling the bow back and forth, rotating the clamps and the wood that was inside. While turning the wood, the other hand was holding the chisel and he slowly carved the intricate shapes on this particular shaft of wood.
