Brighton winter 1963

It is a terrible picture but it is a bit of a surprise discovery: two old negatives of mine actually join to produce a panoramic image of Brighton steam sheds on 22nd (or perhaps 27th) December 1963. I had just turned 14 years of age and had been allowed out with my father’s camera. I had not realised until now that I had taken two shots together like this. Was it an accident or cleverly planned? The right hand image was so poor that I never considered it worthy of publishing but as it joins up I have done so – if only for my own pleasure. The locomotives are "N" class 31830, Ivatt tank number 41260 and standard class 4 number 80139. Another Ivatt tank is visible together with the tender of a Q1 0-6-0 in the shed at the right. On the far right is the silhouette of a class 04 diesel shunter – possibly D2276. The weather was freezing cold and foggy. Even now I can remember my fingers being so frozen I could barely operate the shutter.
