At this writing, I am 80 years old and still a wooden canoe lover, as I was when I built two wooden canoes and restored this one. Building and restoring antique furniture and fine woo1917 – 1984 Old Town Canoe Restoration side Viewden items was what I had done for years, as a hobby. I was familiar with building forms, steam bending, laminating, and saving as much of the antique patina and solid original wood as possible.
Restoration was completed in St. Louis, Missouri, in early 1984 using the guidelines detailed in Jerry Stelmok’s book "Building The Maine Guide Canoe" Chapter 14, and the books of Walter J. Simmons and Atwood Manley.
No effort was made to make the craft look "brand new" or "Mint", I wanted to rebuild the canoe to a well maintained condition. Ready for the water or as a display piece. The thoughts of the experiences, and the pride and joy that the original owners had with this canoe motivated me to do my best work.
