Locomotive History
Fifteen locomotives of class 83 were built between 1960 and 1962 by English Electric at the Vulcan Foundry works, as part of British Railway’s policy to develop a standard electric locomotive. The class 83 suffered with major problems with the water cooled mercury-arc rectifiers, resulting in the entire class being stored in 1969. English Electric put forward several proposals to cure the problem, but it wasn’t until the authorisation of the northern section of the WCML electrification that the plans were carried out, and Silicon Rectifiers fitted to the fleet during refurbishment at Doncaster in 1973-74. 83010 originally E3033 and entered traffic in December 1960. It was finally withdrawn in July 1983 and was broken up by Vic Berry, Leicester in December 1984.
