Shedding season

We were in the mood for a road trip so we decided to check out the Beartooth Highway (Highway 212) in SW Montana, very close to Yellowstone National Park. I was there once many many years ago and was caught in a bad thunderstorm at the top. I remembered it was beautiful country and have always wanted to go back. We got an early start, cut through Yellowstone and then headed up to the pass. Beautiful day, drive, scenery and very little traffic, mostly motorcycles. The road was winding but not too bad at all. Even at the end of July there were snow patches as we wound our way up to the pass. We took some short walks at the pass (10,980 feet above sea level) and just soaked up the sun. We saw storm clouds starting to form so we decided to slowly head back to Yellowstone and our camp site. For travel planning purposes – this road is open seasonally, usually for about 4 months in the summer. There are a number of campgrounds on the highway but no tent camping is allowed due to the high bear population. Bummer. This trip is definitely worth it!

I took these photos at the end of July 2019.
