Time moves on and the abandoned Healey Mills marshalling yard becomes even more abandoned. The pile of scrap and lifted railway tracks mark the site of the former Healey Mills diesel depot. The small brick building to the left and the filled-in inspection pits are all that remains.

The tall lighting masts would only serve to illuminate the dereliction – if they were still working.

Healey Mills on the ex-LYR Calder Valley line in Osset near Wakefield was the largest marshalling yard in Europe when opened in 1963 as part of the British Rail Modernisation Plan. It was closed in 1987 although it remained a driver booking on point until February 2012.

Taken from the Up line through the window of the 18.31 Huddersfield to Wakefield Westgate train. The Down line is about 100 yards away on the far side of the yard. Healey Mills Power Signal Box is still in operation to the right of this view.
