The open cut mine at Rapid Bay was a major source of limestone for Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd (BHP) from 1942 to 1981.
The jetty was constructed as part of the works to establish the mine from 1938 to 1942.
The jetty was first used 5 September 1942 when limestone was loaded onto the SS “Iron Knob” for transport to Whyalla.
During 1981 BHP sold their operations to Adelaide Bright Cement Limited. The jetty was last used for shipments in 1991: loads have been shifted by road transport since then.
Rapid Bay was the first part of the mainland touched by South Australia’s founding father Colonel William Light.
Light arrived from Kangaroo Island on his brig ‘Rapid’ in 1836: he is reputed to have said “I have hardly seen a place I like better”.
The hamlet is well known for spectacular views: the bay is a dive site and one of the areas that is home to the endangered Leafy Sea Dragon.
There exists an old jetty (in parts now), and a new jetty popular with fishers.
