The limestone pavement just west of Ribblehead station is more than tricky to navigate when the surface harbours hidden pockets of ice, each tempting the novice into making a mistake and losing a limb down one of the leg-breaking 3′-4′ deep narrow cracks.

Anyhow, with a 20lb kit bag on the back plus being one of the least sure-footed individuals I know, I opted to unceremoniously crawl over it on hands and knees to bag this shot.

The train is the 7.02am Mossend Yard – Clitheroe Castle Cement (4M00) in the hands of DB Cargo Shed no. 66198. It’s not the shot I expected to come away with but, as often happens, it turned out better than the Plan A option – well, if you like your locos in single digit pixels that is.
