These 2 photos show Balmorhea Public Library, about which I’ve found almost nothing, in Balmorhea, Reeves County, Texas. I was there, early in the morning, the library was closed and nothing else seemingly open. The structure is vernacular, simple in exterior details; it possibly served another function before morphing into a library. I’m guessing the structure is possibly adobe, covered with stucco, which is flaking off. With a symmetrical front elevation, two wooden doors and two windows (6/6 sash), the one-story building rises to a parapet with an arched central portion. Some ornamental woodwork is centrally positioned on each door. At one time the space between the two reading figures was a book lined book shelf. An aligned sign proclaims "Balmorhea Public Library".
Founded in 1906, Balmorhea is a picturesque town, a shaded oasis in desert terrain. The nearby San Solomon Springs provides irrigation for area farmlands; a branch of this irrigation system runs through the small town. The springs are the water source for nearby Balmorhea State Park. Balmorhea had an estimated 2019 population of around 600.
