To join the shelves to the side pieces I chose some pocket joints on the underside. Here is one of the shelves clamped into my Craftsman pocket hole jig. If you’re not familiar with pocket joints I highly recommend checking them out. They’re a fantastic way to do flush or 90 degree joints that look great.
