The Verdun Altar was made in c.1181 and it is named after the artist & craftsman Nicholas of Verdun. The altarpiece is divided into one central panel and 2 wings and comprises 51 copper squares. It is split into 3 rows due to biblical reference. The middle row shows the life and passion of Jesus, while the adjacent rows above and below illustrate the life of Abraham, Moses, Noah or Samson and other topics fitting to the elaborate program of "parallel" scenes. The Medium used for this work is called champlevé enamel work where a metal base with compartments is filled with enamel.
