The old workbench

This is what I was replacing. I understood something of engineering when I built it, but nothing of woodworking. I knew enough to not have the top supported by screws, but it still moved well over 1/2" when I was doing something that aggressively pushed it laterally like hand planing. I also built it at a height that’s pretty good for an assembly table (42") but terrible for hand work and I integrated the pegboard into the bench because at the time I wanted to make sure if we moved the garage around I could take the tool organization. That was probably a terrible idea even if I were moving it, but I never did. I started out just wanted to add a woodworking vise. Then I realized it was too tall and decided to drop 5". Then I decided it was too deep and wanted to cut 4" off the depth. At that point I realized I should just rebuild because I know way more about how wood works now than I did 20 years ago when I built this.
