This design is based on a 13Th century chest from France . It’s about 20" high by 48" long and 18" deep " front to back " . The original had a solid piece of wood for the lid and I couldn’t tell what was carved on it . That didn’t matter as the person I made it for is a huge fan of the vikings and wanted some of those elements incorporated in the design . Other then the lid the rest of the chest was made like the original and I carved it by hand using traditional carving tools . It’s a clever design that’s draw-pegged together . It was a nightmare getting all those joints on the ends to fit up at an angle like that . Most chests were a straight 90 degrees on the end and I understand why now . The vertical boards are 2" thick rock maple and the center boards are 1" thick bass wood . " 8/4 and 4/4 for any wood workers "That’s the reason for the color difference .
