In and around some family birthday festivities, it was time to start working on the leg mortises. It’s a compound angle (balanced, fortunately: 9 deg rake, 9 deg splay) which is a little tricky. Turns out that the boring part is really not that difficult — if the legs had cylindrical or tapered tenons, I’d be done already. But they have rectangular tenons, so the geometry gets a bit tricky. The plans call for square tenons, which would be a bit easier, but I didn’t have enough wood in the scrap pile for that and didn’t want to cut them down to square for fear of their looking weirdly spindly. And not being spindles, that would be a bad thing. So off we go…
